LL Cool J was only 16 years old when he began taking his first serious steps into Hip-Hop, but behind the teenager dreaming of becoming a rapper was a family willing to believe in his talent. Decades later, the artist reflected on how his grandparents played a crucial role in helping him begin a career that would eventually make him one of the most influential figures in Hip-Hop culture.
During a conversation with Trevor Noah, LL Cool J opened up about his early years and explained that his grandfather was much more than a family member. He was one of the first adults to genuinely believe that the young artist had what it took to succeed in music.
His grandmother also played an important role in that story. After seeing how passionate the teenager was about Hip-Hop, she convinced her husband to buy him equipment that would allow him to develop his skills at home.
His grandfather eventually purchased two turntables and a mixer, equipment that represented much more than electronic devices for a teenager with musical ambitions. With them, LL Cool J began experimenting with music, practicing and developing the foundation of what would eventually become his professional career.
His grandfather’s own relationship with music helped strengthen that connection. He was a jazz saxophonist and even recorded his grandson’s voice using the recording equipment available at the time.
For LL Cool J, that gesture was a powerful sign of confidence. His grandfather saw something in him long before the music industry recognized his potential.
His Grandfather Already Saw the Future Star
One of the most memorable stories happened while his grandfather was hospitalized. While listening to the radio, he reportedly insisted that the voice he was hearing belonged to his grandson, even before LL Cool J had become a household name.
That confidence would take on an even greater meaning years later.
When it was time to release his debut album, the rapper decided to call it “Radio,” a title that became closely associated with the early stage of his career and the environment in which he developed his sound.
The album was released in 1985 through Def Jam and became one of the defining projects of the label’s early years. Before that, LL Cool J had already attracted attention with “I Need a Beat,” a song released when he was just 16.
The track helped open doors in the music industry and marked the beginning of a career that would eventually extend far beyond music, including major acting roles and television appearances.
His Grandmother Had One Very Unusual Warning
The family support came with rules as well.
LL Cool J recalled with humor that his grandmother wanted him to understand that pursuing a career in Hip-Hop did not mean abandoning his responsibilities. At one point, he had to choose between continuing his education or leaving home to pursue his musical ambitions.

The young artist chose music.
However, his grandmother also had some rather unusual conditions. Among them was a warning that later became one of the funniest stories from his early years: he could pursue Hip-Hop, but he needed to keep his shirt on and not even think about getting his nipples pierced.
The unusual rule generated laughs during the conversation, but it also reflected the personality of a woman who, in her own way, was trying to guide and protect the young artist.
What makes the story particularly interesting is that the same family that established those boundaries was also the family that gave LL Cool J the tools he needed to pursue his dream.
From Two Turntables to Hip-Hop History
What began with a teenager practicing at home eventually became a decades-long career.
LL Cool J went on to become one of Hip-Hop’s most influential figures, earning two Grammy Awards, building a successful acting career and being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021.
His story is a reminder that behind many legendary careers are small moments that ultimately change everything. In his case, those moments involved a pair of turntables, a mixer and a grandfather who believed in his potential.
Long before the major stages, awards and worldwide recognition, LL Cool J was simply a teenager who wanted to make music and was fortunate enough to have a family willing to believe in him.
And that early investment ultimately paid off.
