Drake showed support for Kanye West this week, while Ye himself was in Chicago celebrating the unveiling of “Dr. Donda West Way,” the street named in honor of his mother. The gesture, small as it was, didn’t go unnoticed by anyone familiar with the recent history between the two artists.
A Rivalry That Defined an Era
Drake and Kanye West have had well-documented differences over the years, especially between 2018 and 2021, when Ye posted numerous angry messages on social media targeting his former collaborator. Drake’s feud with Pusha T also unfolded during that same period, adding even more fuel to the tension between both camps.
Over time, the two eventually patched things up and even shared the stage at the Free Larry Hoover benefit concert. Since then, though, neither one had publicly acknowledged the other again, aside from a few tweets from Ye about the Drake and Kendrick Lamar feud.
The Gesture That Reignited Speculation
Despite that long silence, Drake broke it this week. As we covered in our report on the Dr. Donda West Way ceremony, Ye personally attended to unveil the honorary street sign and visited the home where he grew up, joined by old Chicago friends like Rhymefest and GLC.
According to a post by the @Kurrco account on X, it was precisely a video of that moment that Drake ended up “liking” on Instagram.
From Collaborators to Rivals, and Back Again
Drake and Kanye worked together frequently for years, with Drake even writing hits for Ye at different points in his career. Then came the era of open rivalry, and now, it seems, both have quietly slipped back into something closer to the friendship they once had.
That said, given Ye’s often controversial and unpredictable public presence, it doesn’t seem particularly likely that this gesture will lead to a new collaboration between the two anytime soon. Still, it’s meaningful to see Drake continuing to acknowledge Kanye and his family, despite everything that has happened between them.
This moment arrives at a significant point for both artists: Drake is already gearing up for a world tour in 2027, while Ye is currently on the road, delivering some of the biggest shows of his career.
